The geometric patterns, like the larger board, are full-thickness end grain wood...turn the board over and you'll find exactly the same pattern underneath as on top. End grain butcher block boards are much gentler to your knife edges; the end grain fibers absorb the cut so well, you have a hard time finding evidence of use.
